What Are KS2 SATs?
KS2 SATs, also known as Year 6 SATs, are a combination of formal exams and informal assessments in English, Maths, and Science taken by children in Year 6. These tests are crucial for both the students and their schools. Individual SATs results are provided to parents at the end of the academic year.

The History of KS2 SATs
KS2 SATs were introduced in 1995 under the Education Reform Act of 1988, starting with formal tests in English, Maths, and Science. Over the years, several changes have been made, including the introduction and later discontinuation of the Mental Maths Test, reintroduction of Level 6 tests, and shifts towards more teacher assessments in Science and Writing. The recent 2016 update introduced new SATs tests aligned with the national curriculum and replaced level thresholds with scaled scores.
When and Where Are KS2 SATs Held?
The 2025 KS2 SATs are scheduled to take place during the week commencing 12th May 2025. The precise dates and exam timetable can be found on our 2025 SATs page, where you can also download a PDF version or add the dates to your online calendar. These tests are typically administered in the children's classrooms and must be taken as per the schedule with no flexibility for absences.
Who Takes KS2 SATs?
Children attending state schools in England take KS2 SATs in Year 6, usually when they are between 10 and 11 years old. Teachers are responsible for registering all eligible pupils through the 'primary assessment gateway' (PAG) from early February 2025, with a registration deadline in early March 2025.
Are KS2 SATs beneficial?
Research indicates that SATs provide a valuable assessment method for maintaining accountability in schools.
How many KS2 SATs papers are there?
There are six papers in total: one English Reading, three Maths, and two Grammar, Punctuation & Spelling.
What Do KS2 SATs Include?
The KS2 SATs include tests in English Reading, Maths, and Grammar, Punctuation, and Spelling (GaPS). Students will face the following papers:
English Reading
Maths Paper 1 (Arithmetic)
Maths Paper 2 (Reasoning)
Maths Paper 3 (Reasoning)
Grammar, Punctuation & Spelling Paper 1 (Questions)
Grammar, Punctuation & Spelling Paper 2 (Spelling Test)
In addition to these tests, teacher assessments are conducted in Writing and Science.
Marking and Scores
KS2 SATs papers are marked by external examiners, while Writing and Science assessments are done by the child's teacher. The total marks for each paper are as follows:
English Grammar, Punctuation, and Spelling Paper 1 (Questions): 50 marks
English Grammar, Punctuation, and Spelling Paper 2 (Spelling): 20 marks
English Reading: 50 marks
Maths Paper 1 (Arithmetic): 40 marks
Maths Paper 2 (Reasoning): 35 marks
Maths Paper 3 (Reasoning): 35 marks

My name is Andrew-John Paterson.
I have been a teacher and Headteacher for 30 years.
